Prepare your home for the cold winter
There are few procedures you would need to follow to protect your Tacoma home for the winter.
You want to make sure that your plumbing system won’t be damaged by the cold temperatures.
It is primordial that you purge the outside water system of your Tacoma home to avoid the water left in the pips to freeze. When freezing, the water actually expands and ends up creating an important pressure on the pipes creating cracks or worse.
To purge the outside water system, you need to find your outside water shutdown valve and turn it down. Looking for your water shutdown valve? Follow this guide here.
Then you open your outside faucet to release the water left in the system. When no more water is coming out of the faucet, your outside water system will be officially purged. Turn off the faucet valve and you are done. Your Tacoma home is ready for a cold winter.
The other option, if you don’t want to shutdown your outside water system of your Tacoma property is to slightly open your outdoor faucets to let your water run. It takes lower temperatures for the moving water to freeze. When the water freezes, the pressure in the pipes increases, if the faucet is opened then the pressure will be able to leave the pipe through the faucet avoiding to burst the pipe.
When temperatures go up again at the end of winter, it is important to do a full check up of your water system to spot any leak in your Tacoma home. You can follow our tutorials on how to find leaks, here.
If you verify you have a leak or you are unsure, we recommend contacting a professional to locate the water leak for you.
